I want to reiterate Hall’s question here- “If the function of ideology is to ‘reproduce’ capitalist social relations according to the ‘requirements’ of the system, how does one account for subversive ideas or for ideological struggle?” (30). Does Hall answer this question? Can we discuss how Hall is using terms like “vulgar”, “social” and “political”?
Stuart Hall writes, “It is therefore much more difficult to give the notion of ‘Britain’ a socially radical or democratic reference” (42). Is democracy inconsistent with nationalism? If national identity is seen in relation to racist connotation in Britain, does it also influence critiques of anti-colonial nationalist resistance?
